Lap-Band® is an adjustable gastric banding system designed to help you realize your weight loss goals.
There are risks involved with any type of surgery. Fortunately, the Lap Band procedure is minimally invasive with a low complication rate and is the safest of all weight loss procedures available. However, it is important to be aware of the risks and possible complications.
Selecting a qualified surgeon with qualified surgical staff will decrease your chances of complication. At Inland Empire Surgery Center, we use only board certified surgeons & anesthesiologists, registered nurses and experienced surgical staff to ensure that you are in safe hands. You can check to see if your surgeon is board certified at the American Board of Medical Specialties website. It is also important to talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking and any medical conditions you have, may have or had in the past. Following pre- and post-surgery instructions is also vital.
Binge eating and/or excessive vomiting can stretch or dilate the esophagus, causing significant complications. If either of these occur, you need to contact your doctor immediately. It is also important to note that this procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and risks associated with undergoing this type of anesthesia will be present. Significantly overweight patients, elderly patients and patients with significant health problems are at greater risk for complication. In extremely rare cases death can occur.
Your doctor will discuss these complications with you at your complimentary consultation. It is important to be aware of how your surgeon avoids complications and how he will handle them if they occur.
