Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the appearance of the ears, most commonly ear deformities caused from birth defect.
In young children, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia, but is commonly performed under local anesthesia for teen and adult patients. Ear cartilage is then surgically reshaped and positioned properly, adjacent to the mastoid bones of the scull.
To prevent disruption and infection, a special contour-conforming ear dressing is to be kept on the ears for approximately one week following the procedure. A headband is also utilized for six weeks after the procedure to allow the changes to stabilize.
Ear deformity is a common birth defect that varies in complexity and often remains “un-repaired” into adulthood. During fetal development, failure of the outer rim of the ear to fold back toward the scalp, causes undue prominence. Children are prime candidates for this procedure. Children with this deformity are often teased by other children, so it is recommended that otoplasty is performed prior to entering school. Anyone who is unhappy with the appearance of his or her ear(s) is a candidate for this procedure.
