A chemical peel is most commonly performed to enhance a person’s appearance by removing damaged outer layers of skin to improve and smooth the appearance of face. Individuals with wrinkles, blemishes & uneven skin pigmentation are candidates for this procedure. This treatment can also be used to remove pre-cancerous skin growths, control acne and soften facial acne scars. In some cases, health insurance will cover chemical peel treatments. Be sure to consult your insurance company prior to your procedure.
Three types of treatments are available to provide the best results for you. The exact formula used will be adjusted to meet each patient’s needs.
Peels using glycolic, lactic or fruit acids are used to provide smoother, brighter-looking skin with minimal recovery time. This treatment is used to treat areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation, fine wrinkling and acne and takes approximately ten minutes to perform. This option is the lightest and mildest of chemical peels. AHA peels may be used in conjunction with facial wash or cream as part of a daily regimen. Multiple treatments may be necessary to obtain desired results. Your doctor will discuss a treatment plan prior to treatment. Stinging, irritation, redness or crusting may occur after the treatment, but will subside after a few days.
TCA peels are medium-depth peels used to smooth fine surface wrinkles and to clear blemishes and pigmentation problems. Treatments take approximately 15 minutes to perform. Multiple treatments are likely to be required. A treatment plan will be discussed in detail with your doctor. Stinging, irritation, redness or crusting may occur after treatment, but will subside after several days. Slight swelling may occur for several days. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for several months after treatment to protect the layers of skin.
Phenol peels are deepest of all chemical peels and is used to treat areas with sun damage, course facial wrinkles and pre-cancerous growths. Treatments take between one and two hours to complete. In many cases, sedatives are used to mimize dicomfort. Phenol treatments may lighten the skin’s pigmentation. Your doctor will discuss your treatment plan and all risks involved prior to beginning your treatments. Like with AHA and TCA peels, stinging, redness, irritation and crusting may occur after your treatment, but will subside. Unlike the other peels, extreme swelling may occur and can last up to ten days. Phenol treatments often also cause loss of pigmentation of the skin and may cause an uneven skin tone. Healing time may take up to several months, however you will be able to return to normal activities after a week or so. Phenol peels pose special risks for patients with a history of heart disease. Please discuss this condition with your doctor prior to your treatments.
Chemical peels are typically safe procedures when it is performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon or dermatologist. In rare cases, infection and scarring may occur.
Prior to your treatment, Retin A or AHA cream may be used to pre-treat skin and thin the outside layers, which will allow the chemical peel treatments to more deeply penetrate and even out the layers skin. A bleaching agent, such as Hydroquinone, may be used prior to your chemical peel treatment as well if you have pigmentation problems or areas of blotchy skin. The pre-treatment phase may necessary for up to one month prior to your chemical peel. Your doctor will discuss all pre-treatment recommendations with you.
